Why living near the sea changes your brain

The science of the 'blue mind': how proximity to water lowers stress and reorganizes attention.

It's not just a feeling. Research on the so-called blue mind shows that environments near water shift the brain from an alert state to one of soft focus — the same frequency we reach when rested and creative.

The constant sound of waves works as predictable noise, which the brain learns to ignore and, in doing so, relaxes. The vastness of the horizon widens perception and lowers cortisol. Living near the sea is, literally, living near a mood regulator.

Architecture comes in as a mediator here: to frame the sea is to frame well-being.
